Harry Kalas Dies
Monday, April 13th, 2009
The legendary broadcast voice of the Philadelphia Phillies since 1971, Kalas collapsed and died in the broadcast booth at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC today (4/13) at approximately 12:30pm (ET). He was 73. Kalas was found unconscious in the booth where he was preparing for today’s game between the Phillies and the Nationals. He was rushed to George Washington Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Cause of death was not released. “We lost Harry today,” said Phillies president David Montgomery. “We lost our voice.” Today’s game between Philly and Washington is being played as scheduled. However, in the wake of Kalas’ death, the team has elected to not make a scheduled visit to the White House tomorrow where President Barack Obama was to honor the Phil’s for their 2008 World Series Championship. Kalas was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. The “voice of the Phillies” is also familiar to millions outside the “City of Brotherly Love” as the narrating voice of NFL films for many years.

Nationally syndicated talker Doug Stephan checks-in by email from Iraq where he’s on a charity mission. “I’m sending this to you from the former home of Saddam’s son in Baghdad,” writes Stephan. “It may be the most eerie experience of my life. I’m here with the Gary Senise-inspired “Operation Iraqi Children” — giving medical supplies and school aides to children of families who have lost parents during the war.” Stephan reports that in a conversation with a U.S. General in charge in the region he learned that “our troops will be out of here by 2011.” Also along on the mission of mercy with Stephan is KLIF/Dallas talker Jeff Bolton. Stephan also says he plans to regularly post video and pix of his visit to the Middle East on his website this week at
