John Madden Retires From Broadcasting

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

The Hall of Fame coach and one of the most honored broadcasters in sports broadcasting history announced today that he is retiring. “It’s time,” said Madden in a statement released by NBC Sports. “I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall.” Madden called his life in the NFL over the past 40-plus years “a great ride” and said he still loves the job, which is why it took him several months to come to a final decision. “I still love every part of it — the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people. But I know this is the right time.” In addition to his .750 winning record as an NFL coach — the best of any head coach in NFL history — Madden’s EA Sports video game Madden NFL Football is the number one selling sports video game of all time, with more than 65 million copies sold since it’s release 20 years ago.

Station PD Peter Bolger reports there were no problems at the event and says the huge crowd was “respectful of the sacred Alamo grounds” and “having a heck of a good time!”

We’re not exactly sure what refreshments were being served at yesterday’s “Tea Party” in Macon, GA, but apparently whatever was in those tea cups inspired WMAC morning host Chris Krok to whip the crowd into a frenzy by performing some sort of “Georgia jig” to ward off any new taxes. More than 600 protesters turned out for the Middle Georgia event organized and emceed by the host of “Krok Talk.”
