Conservative Talkers Good And Bad For GOP

Friday, June 12th, 2009

That’s the opinion of Wall Street Journal columnist, author and political veteran Peggy Noonan in a recent post on how conservative Talk media is impacting the normal reorganization of the party out of power that takes place following all presidential elections. “What’s really different now, that is assisting and complicating the process for Republicans that didn’t exist in 1977 and was only a nascent force in 2000, is the conservative media infrastructure,” says Noonan (pictured). “Absent a compelling leader with an actual vision of the future, conservative media (I speak here of the highly popular radio shows) lend a sense of dynamism to what used to be called Republican thought. This has given an air of vitality, of presence, to Republican views.” But Noonan also points out what she sees as the downside for Republicans that conservative Talk radio creates. “The Democrats message on Republicans has gone from ‘the party of no’ to ‘the party of angry white men.’ If they get away with it, it will be in part because angry talkers in the conservative media infrastructure too often leave themselves open to the charge.” Read Noonan’s full column HERE.

Geronimo Back On Talk Radio

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Veteran DC radio personality Don Geronimo — who “retired” as co-host of the long running, syndicated Don & Mike Show last year — is returning to the air at WGMD/Rehoboth Beach, DE. Beginning June 22nd, Geronimo (pictured) will host middays (9am-noon) on the Resort Broadcasting-owned FM talker. “Don Geronimo is one the most compelling radio personalities ever, and will add to our already stellar local Talk lineup ” said WGMD PD and morning host Dan Gaffney. The addition of Geronimo at “The Talk of Delmarva” means that, with the exception of Premiere Radio Networks’ Rush Limbaugh Show, WGMD will be live and local from 5:30am-10pm weekdays. “If we can do, and be profitable, anyone can do it,” says Gaffney. “I wish the radio industry would wake up and realize that.”

Talk Media News Notes

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Premiere Radio Networks talk host and FOX News Channel personality Glenn Beck gets an additional hour on WOR/New York beginning June 22nd. Management reports the decision to expand Beck’s syndicated radio show to 9am-noon on the Buckley Broadcasting News/Talker is due to his “explosive ratings success” … Responding to KSTP/Minneapolis PD Steve Konrad’s recent comment that radio station websites aren’t really in a position to become a market’s “go to” source for news and info due to so many newsroom layoffs in recent years, WEEI/Boston VP/GM Tim Murphy begs to differ. “Here at WEEI we are definitely establishing ourselves as the ‘go to’ source for Sports news, information and entertainment in the Boston market.” Murphy invites you to check out the Entercom Sports/Talker’s online efforts at www.weei.comBob Basso, the YouTube sensation a.k.a. “The 21st Century Thomas Paine,” will headline this Sunday’s Flag Day celebration hosted by WKRC/Cincinnati. National media including AP, CNN and FOX News are slated to cover the June 14th event that will also feature “55KRC” morning host Brian Thomas.

Not So Fast On That RAB/NAB Convention Merge

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Despite reports by other industry trades, NTS MediaOnline Today has learned that there is no firm plan in place to co-locate the annual RAB Sales Conference with the NAB Radio Show next year. Following yesterday’s announcement that the RAB was laying off EVP/Training George Hyde and EVP/Services Mike Mahone — along with at least nine other staffers in the RAB’s Dallas office — a number of industry publications reported the two entities would co-locate their conventions in the Fall of 2010. However, NAB EVP/Media Relations Dennis Wharton says “no decision” has been made on any such merger but left the door open adding, “In the final analysis we want to do what is in the best interests of our members and both organizations.” Hard to imagine such a decision would be made prior to the NAB naming a new President/CEO to replace David Rehr who recently exited as head of the broadcasters’ group. The NAB Radio Show had been scheduled to hold a co-located convention with Radio & Records in Philadelphia next September, but that plan changed abruptly when, after 35 years, R&R owner Nielsen pulled the plug and shut down the music industry trade pub last week.

Gracies Go Hollywood

Friday, June 12th, 2009

The American Women in Radio & Television’s annual “Gracie” Awards will move to Los Angeles in 2010 after more than three decades of holding the ceremonies in New York City. Next year’s 35th anniversary event will take place on May 25th at L.A.’s Beverly Hilton Hotel. Shown clutching her 2009 Gracie Award during last week’s ceremonies at the New York Marriott Marquis is CNN Radio correspondent April Williams. Williams was honored with an award for “Outstanding Investigative Program” by AWRT for her series, “America’s Dirty Little Secret,” which focused on the little publicized problem of human trafficking in the U.S. Established in 1975, the “Gracies” strive to encourage the realistic and faceted portrayal of women in entertainment, commercials, news and other programs.
