Genachowski: “No Fairness Doctrine”
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Responding to a question from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (pictured) during his Senate confirmation hearing today (6/16), FCC Chairman-nominee Julius Genachowski was emphatic as to his position on any return of the so-called Fairness Doctrine. Asked by the Texas Republican to state his position “for the record” on any revival of the repealed FCC statute Genachowski replied, “I don’t support reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. I believe strongly in the First Amendment. I don’t think the FCC should be involved in censorship of content based on political speech or opinion.”
That’s just one of the questions the Media Research Center suggests should be asked today of President Obama’s choice to head the FCC, Julius Genachowski, as he faces a confirmation hearing by the U.S. Senate. It’s the same question FOX News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked David Axelrod back in February, to which the Obama advisor replied, “I’m going to leave that issue to Julius Genachowski (pictured) and the President to discuss.” The MRC also suggests the next apparent FCC Chairman should be asked if he favors mandated “local content boards” and go on the record with his thoughts on shortening the license period for radio broadcasters. In a Q&A with the Washington Post (6/15) Premiere Radio Networks host and FOX News Channel personality Glenn Beck said not only does he condemn any posts to his shows’ online comment pages that advocate violence against the current administration, he’ll also alert the Secret Service. “Anyone who is making threats or thinking about violence on any side of any issue is not only foolish, they will be the ones to destroy the republic,” said Beck (pictured). “Not only do I condemn it, if my webmaster sees anything like it we alert Secret Service. Our forefathers fought long and hard so we didn’t have to. I think we need to model ourselves after Martin Luther King and Gandhi. That’s the way to retain credibility and have lasting change.” Read the full Q&A
