While reports that the 92-year old legendary news anchor is “gravely ill” continue to circulate, several individuals close to Cronkite, including his longtime CBS News colleague Andy Rooney, say reports of Cronkite’s imminent death are exaggerated. “Walter’s going to live — for now,” Rooney told TV Newser’s Gail Shister. I know he’s not active. He can’t get around much. He’s old, for goodness sake.” Apparently reports that CBS News had been updating their files for Cronkite’s obituary in recent days sparked the initial reports of his imminent death. However, such updates are standard procedure at most news operations to prepare in advance for a situation that may not be imminent, but is inevitable.
