Longtime broadcasting exec and current Tribune COO Randy Michaels has been named Chief Executive Officer of the media conglomerate. Michaels succeeds financier Sam Zell who will remain as Chairman of the Windy City based media company that has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy for most of the past year. Along with his appointment to the CEO’s job, Michaels will now also join the Tribune Co. board. In a statement published earlier today in the company’s flagship newspaper The Chicago Tribune Michaels said, “There is a lot of work to do, but we have tremendously talented people and world-class brands in print, on-air and online. The entire management team is focused on the long-term and keeping Tribune at the cutting edge of creativity and innovation, which will translate into success on the bottom line.” Read the newspaper’s full account of Michaels’ promotion HERE.

Advertising icon David Ogilvy once said, ‘A copy writer who knows his facts, i.e. the trigger which makes people aware of advertisements, can reach many more people than a copy writer who doesn’t.’ There’s a veritable fortune lying out there, but it’s going to stay there because so many radio stations don’t pay attention to Ogilvy’s premise: ‘Message before medium.'”
