Ohio Morning Man Tosses His Alarm Clock

Friday, January 29th, 2010

WKBN/Youngstown morning host Robert Mangino will be starting his day just a little bit later come February 15th when he joins KDKA/Pittsburgh to host 6-10pm on the CBS Radio News/Talker. Mangino will takeover the slot previously occupied by KDKA veteran Mike Pintek who moved to middays earlier this week. A western Pennsylvania native, Mangino first joined WKBN in 1996, following a stint in afternoons at his hometown radio station WKST/New Castle, PA. “As a teenager in New Castle, I would dream of what it would be like to work at KDKA in Pittsburgh,” said Mangino. “Now – to be following the great talk show hosts like John Cigna and Fred Honsberger – and to work with Larry Richert, John Shumway, Marty Griffin and Mike Pintek – the dream has come true!”

Podcast Listeners OK With Ad Messages

Friday, January 29th, 2010

With more and more Talk radio personalities adding podcasts to their media arsenal, a new study by Edison Research, in conjunction with the Association for Downloadable Media, offers good news for both current and would-be Talk podcasters. The Podcast Consumer Attitudes Study found that while many active podcast users are increasingly turning away from some mass media ad approaches, they’re receptive to advertising and sponsorship messages in downloadable media. Edison VP Tom Webster said, “These are attractive, affluent consumers that mass media is losing. 90% of respondents indicated they had taken some kind of action as a result of podcast advertising or sponsorship.” The just released research study also notes that active podcast users “show a significant tendency to consume podcasts on their mobile phones.” Get additional details and insights from the study HERE.

A Different Kind Of Arbitron “Fly-In”

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

This time around it’s radios that are ‘flying in’ as the ratings giant partners with radio manufacturer Eton to send solar and crank-powered multi-function radios to Haiti for the victims of the recent earthquake. Although many radio stations in Port-Au-Prince were reported wrecked by the ‘quake, several are back on the air and broadcasting vital information to Haitians as only over-the-air radio can do. “Sources have indicated that Haitians are depending on radio for information on where to obtain medical help, food, supplies, and locating missing loved ones,” said recently appointed Arbitron President/CEO William Kerr. “We felt it was important to ensure that they had access to this necessary resource.” See the Eton Red Cross Radio that makes a good addition to anyone’s home emergency kit HERE.

Kelly Steps Down At Fisher/Seattle

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

After an eight year run as group programmer for Seattle-based Fisher Communications, and as PD of the company’s Emerald City all-newser KOMO, veteran programmer Dennis Kelly has elected to step down from day-to-day duties, but will continue to consult both KOMO and conservative Talk clustermate KVI through his own company, News Talk Concepts. KVI PD Travis Box remains in his current role, with a new PD for KOMO expected to be named in the near future. Kelly (pictured) tells NTS MediaOnline Today that his departure is a personal decision of his own choosing that will allow him more time with his family and the opportunity to focus his energies on the successful consulting business he stepped back from when he took on full time duties at Fisher. “I love fixing broken brands,” he said. “The time has come for me to return to my core business.” Kelly also reports that over the next couple of weeks he’ll have additional announcements about new consulting clients that his company will soon be working with. You can reach out to him HERE.

Rush Says, “Viva Las Vegas!”

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Premiere Radio Networks host Rush Limbaugh, who is in Las Vegas this week as an invited judge for the annual Miss America pageant, joined his fellow judges on stage yesterday for a press conference at Sin City’s Planet Hollywood. Las Vegas Sun reporter John Katsilometes reports that while Limbaugh was “easily the hottest property” on the panel of judges, questions from the press for El Rushbo were limited to “only queries addressing his direct affiliation as a judge for this year’s pageant.” At the end of the press conference Limbaugh (pictured with this year’s judging panel) drew laughs as the judges all posed for a group photo and received applause from the assembled press gallery. “This is the first time I’ve ever been applauded by the press,” he joked.
