» Salem Bites The Big Apple: To no one's surprise the company flipped to News/Talk in New York City earlier today as the former WWDJ officially became WNYM "The Apple." As expected, the station is now home to Salem Radio Network talkers Mike Gallagher, Bill Bennett, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt, as well as Take On The Day's Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Westwood One's Jim Bohannon. The Wall Street Journal This Morning, anchored by Gordon Deal, airs 5-6am. PD Peter Thiele says the new "Talk of New York" was created because Gotham City listeners, "deserve another choice for entertaining, intelligent conversation."

» Paris Takes On McCain: In the hottest new viral video on the Internet none other than Paris Hilton takes a shot at politics in general and Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain specifically. Responding to a recent campaign ad for McCain that compares Democratic opponent Barack Obama to celebs like Hilton and party pal Britney Spears, the woman who's become famous-for-being-famous purrs, "I'm a celebrity, but I'm not from the olden days, or promising change like that other guy. I'm just hot." The latest round in what may go down as the weirdest presidential campaign in history can be viewed HERE.

» Hold On, Not So Fast There: In the wake of a discovery that a "media affiliated household" returned a diary in the 2008 Spring Arbitron for Providence, the ratings company has announced it will revise and reissue the Spring numbers next Monday (8/11) and warns that "audience estimates for WPRO-AM may be substantially affected in particular demos and dayparts." The station, which jumped 3.7-7.2 (12+) in the latest book, began simulcasting its programming on 99.7 FM last March via former Sports/Talker WSKO. The "WPRO" call letters also belong to the AM News/Talker's CHR clustermate which plays the hits at 92.3 FM.

» KTRS Flip Flops: The St. Louis Sports/Talker has collected over 5,000 pairs of the slip-on sandals to help injured U.S. troops. PD Todd Manley tells NTS Aircheck Today that the promotion was born after station meteorologist Chris Higgins -- currently serving overseas as a member of the Air Force Reserve -- told station host Mark Christopher that injured and recovering soldiers needed something to wear on their feet while recuperating in the hospital." The request resulted n the launch of KTRS' "Flip Flop And Drop" campaign where listeners can drop off the sandals at the station and at satellite locations around the Gateway City. "The station is bursting at the seams with flip flops thanks to the outpouring of listener support," says Manley.

» Debate Moderators Set: The New York Post reports that veteran news anchors Tom Brokaw, Bob Schieffer and Jim Lehrer will lead the upcoming presidential debates between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Representing NBC, CBS and PBS respectively, the Post notes that ABC News was left off the list and speculates about why neither World News Tonight anchor Charles Gibson, or ABC News This Week host George Stephanopoulos were invited as debate moderators. A spokesperson for the non-partisan debate organizers told the newspaper "a moderator's network affiliation is not a consideration" when it comes to who gets chosen. Read more HERE.

» Journal Names Three To Digital Media Team: Milwaukee-based Journal Broadcast Group has named Jim Thomas as VP/Marketing, Programming and Interactive Media. A 15-year company veteran, Thomas will report to Journal CEO Doug Kiel who said, "Jim has done a tremendous job helping us develop more targeted successful local products. We think connecting our programming, interactive and marketing efforts under a strategic leader like Jim will advance this process." As his first order of business Thomas immediately promotes Gregg Schraufnagel to corporate Manager/Local Programming and Brent Struense as corporate Creative Manager. Both Schraufnagel and Struense will also retain their current roles as Marketing Directors at WTMJ-TV/Milwaukee and WFTX-TV/Ft. Myers.
