Obama Joins Joyner: As the Democrats descend on Denver to nominate their candidate and stimulate the bar and restaurant economy in the Mile High City, potential first lady Michelle Obama took to the radio airwaves this morning via Reach Media's nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Show. Joyner threw a fast ball out of the box, saying a lot of his listeners -- many of them former Hillary Clinton supporters -- are disappointed in her husband choice of Senator Joe Biden as his running mate, "to the point that they say they have to pray on whether or not their going to vote for the Obama/Biden ticket or vote for McCain." Saying she understood how those who supported "other candidates" were committed to that support, she nevertheless encouraged them to "keep an open mind" and added, "I think in the end people will pray on it, but they'll get the sign that there's no other choice other than Barack Obama for this time in our nation's history." Imus Turns 50: No, it's not Don Imus' birthday -- that was on July 23 when the "I-Man" turned 68. But it is a milestone day for the Talk radio veteran as ABC Radio Networks inks affiliate number 50 for Imus In The Morning, WINZ/Miami. The station joins recently added affiliates KJLL/Tucson, KYNO/Fresno, WELE/Daytona Beach and WSPZ/Birmingham. According to Citadel VP News/Talk Programming Phil Boyce the signing of affiliate number 50 means the show is now heard on more stations nationwide that when it was cancelled by CBS Radio/Westwood One in April 2007. ABCRN re-launched syndication of the program in December '07 when Imus joined WABC/New York as morning host.

As we noted in last Friday's edition, just about everybody is in Denver this week for the Democratic National Convention, from the format's biggest national hosts and the major radio news networks, to local hosts and stations including a contingent from heritage News/Talker WJBC/Bloomington, IL. VP/GM Red Pitcher says PD and afternoon host R.C. McBride headed for the Rocky Mountain State this week, and says midday host Elizabeth Whisman will broadcast her show live from the GOP Convention in the Twin Cities next month. Pretty solid commitment for the Regent Radio-owned outlet in market number 242! Got a convention coverage story from your station to share? Email it HERE.
