It Could've Been Worse: A lot worse! That's the general feeling of most we spoke with who were in the path of hurricane Gustav as the storm hit the Gulf Coast region. WWL/New Orleans -- which has anchored a 15-station regional storm information network that stretched from the Florida panhandle across Southern Louisiana -- reports that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin hopes to announce procedures for "re-populating" the Big Easy later today. Pre-registered "critical businesses" will be allowed to return to the city first, followed by the general population, something Nagin says he hopes will be able to happen, "by week's end." Power outages in the area are still widespread with over 900,000 businesses and residences reportedly still without electricity as of today. New Orleans' Louis Armstrong Airport, is still on generator power and will not reopen to flights until commercial power is restored.

All Quiet On Canal Street: A post-Gustav shot of Canal Street in downtown New Orleans (l) courtesy of FM News/Talker WRNO -- shows clearly that the destruction from the city's latest hurricane was nothing like the damage seen in the aftermath of the now infamous hurricane Katrina. However, a significant clean-up project will still be needed as numerous areas of the city and region suffered major flooding as can be seen in the photo on the right showing waters surging over a levee along New Orleans' Industrial Canal.

Citadel Goes Wall-To-Wall In Baton Rouge: As Gustav raced up the Gulf of Mexico toward the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast, Citadel's six station Baton Rouge cluster offered non-stop coverage for listeners all across the region. As the company did in the wake of hurricane Katrina, Citadel stations augmented their coverage by using the resources of ABC News reporters stationed in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and distributed storm related programming via satellite to cities across the region including Lafayette, LA and Birmingham, AL. Brian Jennings, VP and Corporate Director of News/Talk/Sports for the company, also reports that Citadel News/Talker WTMA/Charleston has already produced and aired special programming to offer vital storm preparation info for residents in that area who are expected to feel the effects of Hanna as that storm heads for the southeast Atlantic seaboard later this week.

Rhode Island Legislator Calls For DePetro's Head: In a letter to the editor of the Providence Journal, state Assemblyman Joseph Almeida (D-Providence) is calling for WPRO/Providence to "take swift and serious action" against station morning host John DePetro in the wake of a recent ratings scandal involving now-discarded tainted diaries that were allegedly returned to Arbitron by DePetro's wife. "Most shocking is DePetro’s position that this deceitful act of altering the ratings was committed by his wife," writes Almeida. "He maintains that he had no knowledge of her covert activity. How can you live in the same household and not be aware of what is going on? If DePetro has one ounce of honesty left, he should pull his wife out from under the bus and take the blame like a man." You can read Almeida's full rant

Friends In High Places: Although much of the news so far this week has been focused on the impact of Gustav in the Gulf region, up in the Twin Cities there's a convention going on to nominate Senator John McCain as the Republican's choice for President. First Lady Laura Bush (r) was in Minneapolis/St. Paul yesterday and dropped in for an exclusive chat with veteran ABC News Radio White House Correspondent Ann Compton.

The junior Reagan will report on events from the convention during a number of Air America's shows and will also co-anchor AAR's evening coverage of events along with David Bender … Melissa Forest has been named President/Market Manager at Clear Channel Radio/Atlanta where she'll oversee the company's six-station Peachtree City cluster including News/Talker WGST. Forest, who replaces former Market Manager Chuck Deskins, will also oversee CC's Atlanta Braves Radio Network and Georgia News Network as part of her new responsibilities.
