» Lee Abrams: "No Government Bailout!": Speaking to Portfolio.com reporter Jeff Bercovici following a presentation to the Dow Jones/Nielsen Media & Money Conference last week in New York, the Tribune Chief Innovation Officer said he would not favor a government rescue of America's ailing newspaper industry similar to that which was designed to bail out the beleaguered banking business. "I think it's a terrible idea," said Abrams. "What would happen is newspapers would then focus on this ultra-elite point-five-percent and create these papers that are just unreachable to a mass audience. I think newspapers have to figure it out on their own. The ones that are smart and do it intelligently will prevail, but I think for government to come in and force this intellectual thing would be terrible. It'd almost be like in 1950, with rock 'n roll coming, all of a sudden the government comes in to support classical music. Read Abrams' full interview HERE.

» Pick Up The Phone, It's John McCain: More mobile media news as supporters of Republican presidential candidate John McCain can now connect to his daily press conferences and weekly radio addresses on-demand. Thanks to a deal with mobile audio service CelleCast "McCain-iacs" can dial up the John McCain Daily Campaign Press Conference by dialing (206) 400-2847. "The opportunity to serve the campaign by putting its news out there on the most accessible and immediate platform, the telephone, was an obvious need that we seized upon," said Cellecast CEO Andrew Deal. "It could not be more timely and relevant." Deal reports that while his company would also like to be "fair and balanced" with a similar product for Democrat Barack Obama he says, "Surprisingly, Obama campaign audio is not readily available for consumption by its supporters."

» Obama Media Spending At Record Levels: The Democratic presidential hopeful is looking downright shrewd with his decision to opt out of public financing for his campaign as he leaves rival John McCain in the dust in terms of the amount of media spending he is mounting in the final weeks of the campaign. The latest report by Media Monitors shows Obama airing just over 19,000 spots on radio last week, compared to McCain's 3500 radio ads. The same gap holds true on broadcast and cable TV where Obama is outspending McCain by huge margins -- more than 4 to 1 on broadcast television and 10 to 1 on cable. » McCain Visits Imus: The Republican presidential candidate drops in for a chat with Don Imus tomorrow morning (10/22) at 7:30am (ET). McCain has made frequent appearances on the Imus In The Morning Show over the years and has always shared a friendly rapport with the talk host. But, as regular listeners know, being friends with the "I-Man" doesn't give any guest immunity from getting tough questions from the acerbic and unpredictable morning man, so tomorrow's appearance by McCain should be one of those "must hear" radio events. For those outside of New York or not in an Imus In The Morning affiliate market, WABC/New York streams the show HERE.
