Interep Still Open ... Sort Of: Following the surprise announcement late on Friday that the rep firm was shifting from its previously declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization to a Chapter 7 liquidation of the company, most staffers got a call yesterday (10/26) asking them to report to work as usual this morning. That call came as federal bankruptcy trustee Kenneth Silverman continues to sort through the mess in an attempt to save all, or at least some, of the national ad sales rep firm with a client roster that includes a number of major broadcasters including CBS Radio, Entercom, Spanish Broadcasting System and Beasley Broadcast Group. Expect additional details to surface as this week unfolds.

Smerconish Takes Heat For Obama Endorsement: Conservative-leaning WPHT/Philadelphia morning host Michael Smerconish says he's taking some heavy fire from listeners and other Talk radio hosts for his recent endorsement of Democrat Barack Obama for President. Smerconish dismisses Salem Radio Network host Mike Gallagher's charge that his endorsement represents a "betrayal of his party, beliefs, ideology and this country," as "classic, text book talking-points radio -- all the things that have caused our medium to exclude so many." In his latest column for the Philadelphia Inquirer Smerconish acknowledges an overwhelming backlash from listeners including one who wrote, "You're one awful, greedy, shameless ratings hog. You traded your soul for socialism." Smerconish says he's sticking to his guns and adds, "I will not be bullied by the nasty, doctrinaire types who've had a stranglehold on the GOP for far too long." Management Moves At CBS/Washington: There's a couple of new positions at the company's DC cluster as WPGC AM&FM VP/GM Sam Rogers rises to Market Manager and WJFK-FM SVP/GM Michael Hughes is upped to VP/Programming and Station Manager. In a memo to the staff, CBS Radio President/CEO Dan Mason cited Rogers' "determination to win, creativity and entrepreneurial vision" as a determining factor for the 20-year WPGC veteran's promotion, while also praising Hughes' multi-year and multi-format experience in the market as the qualifications for his expanded role with the cluster. Both promotions are effective immediately.
